NO FOAM ZONE

In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law banning expanded polystyrene (EPS) food containers. These single-use foam containers are being phased out because they are harmful to our health, our communities and our environment.

The ban will affect food service establishments in two phases. Now’s the time to get informed and explore safer, smarter alternatives for your business.

Key Milestones in the Foam Ban

2025, July 1st

Phase One Compliance

Food vendors with 20 or more establishments must adhere to the new regulations.

2026, July 1st

Full Compliance Required

All food vendors are required to eliminate EPS foam containers, marking a significant step towards sustainability.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam isn’t the best choice for people or the environment.

  • EPS foam is not biodegradable so it doesn’t break down naturally; it simply breaks apart into smaller pieces.
  • EPS foam is challenging to clean up when littered and is harmful to wildlife
  • There are many better options on the market including paper, plant, starch-based, foil & metal products.

Not in food service? You’re still encouraged to make the switch! Any business currently using EPS should explore better packaging solutions.

Why the Movement to Go Foam Free?

Environmental Persistence

EPS foam remains in landfills and the environment for over 500 years, contributing to long-term pollution.

Recycling Challenges

EPS foam is not accepted for recycling in Hampton Roads. With less than 1% of EPS foam being recycled globally, it exacerbates waste management issues.

Wildlife Threats

Animals often mistake EPS foam for food, leading to ingestion and potential harm.

Made With Styrene

A chemical linked to cancer and nervous system damage.

Easily Becomes Litter

Polluting parks, streets, waterways and oceans

It’s time to protect our communities, wildlife, and future generations.
