Stormwater Education Guide & Kits

Do you understand the water cycle here in Hampton Roads? Do you know how stormwater runoff plays a role? Do you know why it’s so important to keep our storm drains clear and clean? We can help you and your students learn all this and MORE!

Stormwater Education Guide & Kits

We’re excited to announce a new education resource for Hampton Roads educators. Introducing the Stormwater Education Guide and lendable Stormwater Education Kit program for local teachers and K-12 youth leaders.

Do you need help educating youth about local water quality? Do you want ideas for hands on activities in and out of the classroom? If so, consider checking out one of our new education kits or downloading the education guide.

Whether we mean to or not, we all pollute water. Everyday activities such as walking the dog, driving a car, or how we care for our lawn can contribute to big problems in our local rivers and streams. Stormwater runoff is a major source of water pollution today due to the urbanization of our communities.

But there’s good news… We can all do our part to protect water quality. Everyone has a role to play!

The askHRgreen.org Stormwater Education Kit is an educational program designed to help third-grade teachers meet SOL requirements while educating students about important local water pollution issues. The kit itself includes a rolling tote filled with the supplies needed to do the activities outlined in the teacher’s guide.

Speaking of the guide, as you read through it, you will see that it incorporates visual aids, fun water-themed books, interactive demonstrations, practical worksheets, and outdoor exploration activities. There’s also a detailed backgrounder to empower you, the teacher, to teach this unit to your students. Download the Stormwater Education Teacher’s Guide for activities and worksheets that will get your students thinking and help inspire them to be good stewards of our local waterways.

While the Stormwater Education Guide is  designed to meet third-grade SOLs, these kits can be adapted to meet the needs of ages.

Each kit includes a printed copy of the Teacher’s Guide, a hand-picked selectin of water-themed books, laminated posters, and classroom supplies for the following activities: Fred the Fish, Soil Shakeup, and Schoolyard Exploration.

The Stormwater Education Kits were made possible by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund grant. You can support more programs just like this by purchasing a Friends of the Chesapeake license plate at https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/license-plates/search/chesapeake-bay
