Cut Down On Your Trash By Turning Old Junk Into New Treasures

Recycling can help you save money while helping the environment.  Beyond the recycling of bottles and cans, you can create new items out of old junk you don’t need. Here are a few ideas that may inspire you.

Protect that Dress or Suit

Going on a big business trip or destination wedding? Instead of purchasing a garment bag, reuse some of your old pillow cases. As you clean out the linen drawer, take some of your pillowcases and cut a hole on the stitched side. Simply flip the pillowcase and slide it over a hanger. Now you have homemade recycled garment bags for traveling or even just for hanging clothes in the closet.

Reuse Old Drawers

If you have an old, cheap dresser and the drawers are falling apart, don’t throw it out. Take a drawer, flip it vertically and mount it on your wall. You now have a drawer cabinet. You can add personal touches like wallpaper on the back for looks or a wood plank for an additional shelf.

Your Favorite Shirt Lives On

Have a favorite shirt that no longer fits you?  Instead of throwing it away, turn it into a pillow. Just cut the sleeves off, and sew the edges to create a pouch. Fill the pillow with stuffing, and sew the end. Your shirt will live on and you’ll have a unique throw pillow for the den.

Save the Atlas

World maps and atlases have become relics of the past in the internet age. Instead of tossing your maps, frame them. Old maps add charm to your home decor. Just cut out a section or page of a map and fit it into any frame you may already have. I recommend using the Hampton Roads section!

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking outside the box as you go through your own junk. Just remember to take safety precautions as you embark on your DIY recycling projects.
