REFERENCE-Batten Down the Hatches! Prepare for Tropical Storm Elsa

Tropical Storm Elsa just won’t let it go, but we’re super thankful she’s not bringing snow!

What we are expecting from Tropical Storm Elsa is heavy rain, gusty winds, and eek! the possibility of tornadoes. Here’s what you should be doing now to batten down the hatches and prepare for the tropical weather.
Stay safe, Hampton Roads!
  • Secure Loose Items – Take a stroll around your home and secure any loose items that may fly or float away in high winds or high waters. This includes your recycling and trash carts. Move items indoors if possible or secure outdoor items with bungee cords or weights.
  • Clear Gutters and Ditches – To keep water flowing away from your home is the goal. Check your gutters and ditches for clogs from excess vegetation and litter and remove what you can.
  • Trim Your  Limbs – Cut back tree limbs near your home and remove any weak or dead branches that could pose a threat to your (or your neighbor’s) home.
  • Shelter Your Waste Containers. If possible, secure your trash and recycling containers indoors (i.e. garage, shed, etc.) to prevent an accidental release of litter into the stormwater system. If you are unable to secure the containers inside, attempt to weight the bottom of the receptacle and secure the top with a bungee cord or duct tape.
  • Check Your Supplies – In case of prolonged power or water outages have the following items available: batteries, bottled water, flashlights, battery operated radio, prepared foods and snacks, ice, offline activities for the kids, pet food, and any medical supplies or medicines you or your family may need.
  • Prepare for Rising Flood Waters – If you live in an urban or low-lying area, move what belongings you can off the ground especially in flood-prone areas like garages and sheds. Consider moving your vehicle to higher ground.
  • Secure Hazardous Materials. Move hazardous household chemicals like gas, motor oil, and lawn chemicals indoors and off the ground to prevent them from spilling into flood waters.
  • Stay informed. – Don’t rely on wifi or cell phones for your communications. A landline or battery operated radio is a more reliable way to stay connected.
  • Know Your Zone. If you know where you are, then you’ll know when to go. Use KnowYourZoneVA.org to find your evacuation zone and listen for updates regarding voluntary and mandatory evacuations in your area.
