Test Before You Treat

Before applying fertilizer, start with a soil test. Hampton Roads soils often contain plenty of phosphorus already, and many lawns need less fertilizer than homeowners think. A soil test can also help you understand your soil’s pH and whether lime or other amendments are needed.

Keep Yard Waste Out of Storm Drains

Leaves, grass clippings and other yard debris may seem harmless, but when they wash into storm drains they can cause localized flooding and contribute excess nutrients to local waterways.

Never rake, blow or sweep leaves, grass clippings or fertilizer into streets, ditches or storm drains
Follow your locality’s yard-waste collection schedule and requirements
Rake leaves into flowerbeds or natural areas to provide habitat for overwintering pollinators
Mulch leaves with your mower or add them to compost piles and garden beds
Sweep fertilizer and grass clippings back onto the lawn instead of into the street
