Stormwater Education Kit
A hands-on classroom kit for teaching students about stormwater runoff, pollution prevention and local waterways.
The askHRgreen.org Stormwater Education Kit helps bring water quality lessons to life in the classroom. Designed for third-grade teachers in Hampton Roads, the kit includes hands-on activities, visual aids, reading resources, worksheets and outdoor exploration tools that help students understand how stormwater runoff affects local waterways.

Teachers can check out a physical kit of supplies to use in the classroom and return when finished. The Teacher’s Guide is also available to download for lesson instructions, SOL connections and supporting materials.
About the Kit
Stormwater runoff is created when rainwater or snowmelt flows over hard surfaces like roofs, sidewalks, streets and parking lots. As it moves across the ground, runoff can pick up pollutants such as litter, pet waste, lawn chemicals, soil and other materials before flowing into storm drains and local waterways.

The Stormwater Education Kit helps students make the connection between everyday actions on land and the health of local rivers, streams and the Chesapeake Bay. Through classroom demonstrations, reading activities and schoolyard exploration, students learn how pollution reaches local waterways and what they can do to help prevent it.

What Students Will Learn
Using the activities and resources in the kit, students will learn how stormwater forms, where storm drains lead and how human activities can affect local water quality.
