Beware of the Grease Grinch
Keep holiday cooking grease from clogging your drains
To avoid clogged drains and inconvenient backups, keep fats, oils and grease (FOG) out of your drains, out of your garbage disposal and, ultimately, out of the sewer system.
How FOG Affects Your Drains
Fats, oils and grease can cause problems whether they are poured down the drain or rinsed off plates, pots and pans. As FOG builds up on pipe walls, it restricts the flow of wastewater through your home’s plumbing.
Over time, that buildup can block pipes and cause sewer overflows into homes, streets, storm drains and local waterways. Keeping grease out of drains helps protect your plumbing, your neighborhood and public health.
What to Do With Turkey Fryer Oil
Frying a turkey can leave you with a large amount of used cooking oil. Instead of pouring it down the drain, handle it safely and dispose of it properly.
Turkey fryer oil tips:
- Strain out food particles and store the oil in its original container if you plan to reuse it
- Freeze used oil and place the hardened oil in the trash
- Recycle used cooking oil at your community’s transfer or recycling center if available
- Mix oil with unscented kitty litter, sawdust or sand to solidify it before placing it in the trash
- Avoid scented or disinfectant kitty litter, which can react with oil and create a fire risk
Can It, Scrape It, Catch It
You can keep the Grease Grinch away with three simple kitchen habits: can the grease, scrape your plate and catch the scraps.
Keep The Holidays Merry
No one wants a clogged sink or sewer backup during the holidays. By keeping fats, oils, grease and food scraps out of drains, you can protect your home, your community and Hampton Roads waterways.
Make the choice every day to keep your drains fat free and the Grease Grinch away.
