Large quantities of household FOG (fats, oils or grease) accumulated from cooking, frying, and general food preparation purposes can be recycled at the following locations. Most locations require a minimum of five gallons collected, but smaller quantities can be bagged and disposed of with the regular household waste.
Gloucester County Collections
Twice a year, Gloucester hosts a Household Harmful Waste Collection to rid homes of these hazardous materials. On the third Saturday in April, the Household Harmful Waste Collection is held at the Middle Peninsula Landfill & Recycling Center (Adner – Glenns; entrance on Route 17), located at 3714 Waste Management Way. In October, the collection is held on the third Saturday at the Hayes Convenience Center at 7599 Guinea Road.

Newport News Collection
Used cooking oil is accepted at the City of Newport News Public Works Department’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility, located at the Denbigh Compost and Dropoff Facility, 550 Atkinson Way, Newport News (approximately one mile north of Denbigh Blvd on Warwick Blvd). The facility is open on Fridays and Saturdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The only exceptions are city-observed holidays.
Newport News residents are encouraged to call (757) 886-7947 to ensure that the items they wish to drop off are acceptable.
James City County Convenience Centers
Jolly Pond Road – 1204 Jolly Pond Road – 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. Other recyclables taken at Jolly Pond Road are kitchen grease, waste motor oil and antifreeze, tires*, propane tanks*, scrap metal (including appliances), and brush*. When using this facility, residents are urged to allow ample time to unload vehicles prior to the 5:00 p.m. closing.
Tewning Road – 107 Tewning Road – Monday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; Tuesday – Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Closed – Sunday. Waste motor oil, antifreeze and kitchen grease accepted.
Toano Convenience Center – 185 Industrial Boulevard (Hankins Industrial Park) – 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., seven days a week. Other recyclables taken at the Toano Convenience Center include tires*, automobile batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, metal appliances and kitchen grease.

SPSA Facility Locations
SPSA operates eight household hazardous waste (HHW) collection facilities throughout Hampton Roads. These facilities are open on designated days so residents may bring products such as paint and pesticides to be disposed of safely, free of charge. Limit disposal to five gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid waste per visit.
