New Year Brings New Buzz for Virginia Bees

The New Year always ushers in legislative changes (fiscal cliff, anyone?) but here’s one I hadn’t heard about before. If you’re looking for a green resolution this year, consider beekeeping. The Virginia State Legislature has approved a new grant program which awards beekeepers $200 for every new hive up to $2,400. The hope is these incentives will encourage beekeepers to add hives and increase the dwindling bee population in Virginia.

All that buzzing will help Virginia’s agriculture and crop production when the bees do what they do best and pollinate flowers and plants. If beekeeping is on your list of “things I’ve always wanted to try”, check out this previous post featuring members of the Colonial Beekeepers Association. To find out more about the beehive grant fund or to apply, contact the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Are you a beekeeper or have you always wanted to give it a go? Tell us about your experience.
