Winter Bright Spots

This morning was a rude awakening to the fact that it’s still winter even though the temperature was in the high 60′s last week. Like most of you, I had to get out my ice scrapper this morning and give my car a few extra minutes to warm up – almost reminded me of my days in Northern New York. Anyway, the warm weather has me looking forward to spring’s beautiful colors, but this blog post from the Chesapeake Bay Program has just reminded me that there are plenty of native plants around that dazzle in the winter. Do you have any favorite winter plants?

The bulbs – daffodils, especially – think it is spring already. Some perenials, like Lenten Rose, naturally bloom now. Blooming camelias almost look like Christmas decorations on the bushes! It’s the harbinger and the promise of warm weather soon! But, for now, keep that coat and hat handy.
