I need less grass in my life. My grassy lawn and I have had a rough relationship over the past few years and I’m feeling ready to break up with it. It is so needy. I mow, it grows, I mow, it grows. Not to mention the fact that in the past couple of years, it has just let itself go. I am sick of looking at it. I’m ready to start seeing more plants!
This spring, I’m on a mission to put more mulched beds into my yard. My first project was a small one because I wanted to make sure I could handle this mission (I’m seriously lacking in gardening skills). I pulled out the grass from underneath this random rose bush that lives in our front yard. I shaped it up into a nice little circle and filled it in with a bag of mulch. The result? Amazing! It was such a small part of the yard but it made a huge difference. It even got approval from the husband and he’s a tough critic when it comes to landscaping. Mulched beds add more depth and interest to a boring yard of grass. I’m now confident enough to add a few more mulch beds around the yard! And I plan to keep it simple by planting a few native, self-sufficient shrubs in the new beds (because the last thing I need is another needy plant!)
If I can handle it, so can you. There are SO many benefits beyond aesthetics to replacing some of your grassy lawn with mulched beds. Mulch helps to:
- Retain moisture
- Control erosion
- Stabilize soil temperature

You deserve better. Ditch the grass and add more mulch in your life!
